Communication and Publicity
—
Throughout your organizing, you will be called upon to communicate about Resilience Circles. Circles cover a lot of ground—they are a rich experience where relationships deepen and people re-learn the practice of mutual aid; they address both ecological and economic concerns; and they tap into a vision of a new, fair economy in harmony with the planet. This can be hard to get into a sound bite.
The best place to start is to think about what attracted you to this idea. How would you put that into words? Consider crafting several “handles” for communicating the essence of the Resilience Circle experience:
- Seven two-hour meetings over a period of months for neighbors to get to know each other…
- A way to learn about the roots of the economic turmoil we’re facing and think about how to create more security with one another…
- A way of building community resilience in the face of environmental shocks…
- A group of 10 – 20 people who gathers for learning, mutual aid, and social action…

And, of course, remember the golden rule of communication: know your audience. What does your audience care about? How are their values and interests connected to a Resilience Circle? The Sample Outreach Letter included below can help you think through a few targeted “elevator pitches.”
