The economy and environment are going through a deep transition, leaving many of us feeling anxious and economically insecure. Seacoast Community Empowerment Circles (SCEC) are a community-based, small-group approach to understand and address the economic and ecological challenges of our time.

“These challenges often leave people feeling isolated, vulnerable and anxious,” said Rev. Chris Ney, minister at Central Congregational Church. “In small groups, people can help one another find connection, information, and the avenues they need for a new kind of security, based on mutual aid and support.”

A SCEC is a small group (12-20 people) that meets regularly (weekly if possible) for a limited period (a total of 8 sessions) with three aims: learning together, mutual aid and social action.

The first SCEC formed in February 2001 and met at Central Congregational through the spring. Those who participated in the first Empowerment Circle not only learned together, but felt that it was the rare place they were free to talk seriously with others about their economic and environmental concerns.

The next SCEC Introductory Session will be held at Central Congregational Church, Tuesday, October 25th at 7:00. This 90-minute session provides a flavor of the full curriculum and the benefits of studying and discussing these issues as a group. After the Introductory Session, those who wish to commit to the 7-week curriculum will form into one or more circles, depending on how many people sign up. Times and dates for meetings will be determined by the participants.
